Our client, a banking organization in Greater Portland, is seeking a Chief Financial Officer.  This position will be open due to retirement.

 

The CFO directs, administers, and coordinates the activities of the Bank in support of policies, strategic goals, and objectives established by the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors by performing the following duties personally or through direct reports.  Under the broad guidance of the President & CEO, this position oversees and directs the investment management, accounting/finance, treasury, and asset liability management activities of the Bank.  Also responsible for participating in the development of relationships in the communities the Bank serves.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*:

 

  • Develops and prescribes adequate financial procedures to provide the basis for management decision and control, i.e., pricing policy, investment policy, asset liability policy. Identifies and recommends changes, and new procedures to eliminate weaknesses in practices and procedures around financial management.

 

  • Supervises and administers the Bank’s accounting and fiscal activities by ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of various periodic financial statements and reports; assuming the responsibility for budget implementation and follow up; supervising accrual and general ledger accounting activities; and interpreting financial reports to CEO, Management, the Directors, and regulatory agencies.

 

  • Administers the Bank’s investment portfolio balancing acceptable risk and return while ensuring adequate liquidity.

 

  • Directs the preparation of short-term and long-range plans and budgets based on broad corporate goals and growth objectives.

 

  • Participates in the Bank’s strategic planning process.

 

  • Participates as a member of the Technology Steering Committee and the Board Technology Committee

 

  • Responsible for chairing asset liability management function and developing/implementing strategies to manage interest rate risk.

 

  • Oversees, presents, and interprets financial reports for Senior Management and/or the Board.

 

  • Supervises the preparation of fiscal reporting for the Bank, including cost accounting, budgets, and required Federal Reserve and governmental reports.

 

  • Oversees the Finance & Accounting area by managing the performance of team members in attaining established business goals and encouraging development opportunities. Takes corrective actions as necessary when departmental objectives are not being attained.

 

  • Evaluates the results of overall operations regularly and systematically and reports these results to the Chief Executive Officer.

 

  • Develops and implements, with the management team, new strategies for profitability and operating efficiency.

 

  • Provides income tax management and coordinates with outside tax experts and auditor.

 

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Keeps abreast of all trends and events within the banking industry and the economy and projects their impact on strategic goals. Reviews and extracts legislation and legal decisions affecting the banking industry and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations and statutes. Interacts with regulators as needed.

 

  • Participates in local community affairs and/or obtains membership in local organizations to promote the image of the Bank.

 

  • Conducts ad hoc projects and assignments as directed by the President & CEO.

 

  • Observes safety and security procedures and guidelines.

 

 

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE /TRAINING REQUIRED:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration and a minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in management capacities within a financial institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration and Certified Public Accountant designation preferred.

 

  • A strong working knowledge of automated banking systems and a thorough knowledge of accounting, investments, and finance.

 

  • Demonstration of core leadership competencies: Builds Effective Teams, Communicates Effectively, Develops Talent, Drives Engagement, Ensures Accountability, Instills Trust, Manages Ambiguity and Strategic Mindset.
